FIVEWAYS PLAYCENTRE CELEBRATES 50 YEARS IN THE COMMUNITY

Jpeg On Saturday 20th September Fiveways Playcentre held an uplifting ceremony to kick off a year of festivities to celebrate 50 years of play-centred learning with local children. Families and staff released fifty gold balloons labelled with children’s names into a glorious blue sky. Anyone finding a labelled balloon is encouraged to bring or send it back to Fiveways (between 8-10 Florence Road, BN1 6JD) noting where they found it so that the staff can map the balloons’ journeys and a prize can be given to the child whose balloon travelled the farthest.

“Fiveways is like an oasis in the middle of the city. It’s so built up all around but when you enter there’s this lovely green space and tall trees. Our previous manager, Veronica, was here for 40 years and the brilliant reputation of Fiveways and our impressive staff retention is a credit to her,” notes Gaynor Brown, current manager. Fiveways Playcentre has provided over 4 million childcare hours in its 50 years and has served two generations of families in Brighton and Hove. It is also the first nursery in the country to be a Living Wage employer and won the 2014 Living Wage Champion Award for the South East.

Other golden anniversary celebrations will include a tea party with special guests plus surprises at the Christmas and Summer Fayres. Fiveways Playcentre’s bonfire night will be Saturday 7th November from 5pm – book tickets early to avoid disappointment!

‘ Hi, my name is Gaynor I am the new Manager of Fiveways. I am delighted to be working at such a wonderful centre. I was lucky enough to spend time here last term and got to see the Pre-School running. Veronica, the staff and parents have created a wonderful setting and it is my mission to continue this work and look forward to meeting you and the children.’

FIVEWAYS PLAYCENTRE has been announced as the winner of the Living Wage Champion Awards 2014 for the South East Region.

The awards recognise Living Wage Employers that have made great contributions to communities and industries by implementing and celebrating the Living Wage.

The awards are part of Living Wage Week 2014, a national celebration of responsible pay, running from 2nd – 8th November.

We have always recognised that in many ways Brighton can be just as expensive as parts of London, and Fiveways Playcentre was the first Nursery in the whole of the UK to become an accredited Living Wage Employer.
